The Beginning

Founder Steve Wilcox with Andres Duany at the Kentlands Charette

Parkwood Homes was founded in 1991 and soon became the principal builder in the nationally acclaimed Kentlands, Maryland.  Kentlands is a groundbreaking community outside Washington, DC that helped spark a nationwide trend toward smarter development based on traditional neighborhoods.  As Kentlands gained renown and received visitors from all over the world, Parkwood received several offers to expand outside Maryland and build in new master planned communities.  After turning down many opportunities to expand into other markets, Parkwood accepted an invitation to join the founding team of builders at Stapleton, where America’s largest urban infill redevelopment would result in a thriving community of 30,000 residents on the site of Denver’s old airport.  Both Kentlands and Stapleton are among the Urban Land Institute’s “Great Planned Communities of the World.”  Parkwood Homes currently builds homes in Maryland and Colorado.

Family

Family

We are a small, family-owned company.  Most of our employees have been with us for many years and are seasoned and experienced in homebuilding.  We limit the number of homes we build each year and take great pride in the solid craftsmanship and quality our homes provide.  Although Parkwood is a small company, we have enjoyed very positive recognition for our innovative and high quality homes.  At Parkwood, our loyalties are to our customers and our employees, not Wall Street analysts and stockholders.  Many of our purchasers are repeat buyers, and currently 3 out of 4 Parkwood buyers are coming to us directly because of our reputation.

We understand what a beautiful, well-designed, high-performance home can mean to a family.  It’s the safety and security you feel during a storm.  The joy that comes from hosting friends and family in the one-of-a-kind open first floor plan you designed just for your family.  The cherished memories you build when you read your kids their bedtime stories or enjoy family time around the fireplace.  It’s a great honor to help families build their dream homes, and a responsibility we take great pride in fulfilling.

Thoughtful Communities

Thoughtful Communities

Parkwood has been honored to build in some of America's best neighborhoods. We can afford to be very selective about the communities we build in as well as the homes we build.  The Urban Land Institute has recognized both Kentlands, Maryland and Denver's Stapleton as among the “Great Planned Communities” in the world.  We understand that only our purchasers can turn our houses into homes and our streets into neighborhoods but we do everything possible to help that process along.  Because community is so important, a lot of thought and planning goes into each of our streetscapes.  House massing and roof configurations are thoughtfully planned, we use high quality building materials that age with dignity, and we do our best to quickly establish a sense of place.

Inspired Architecture

Inspired Architecture

Will you still love your home in 100 years?  Parkwood’s exterior architecture is driven by a commitment to timeless principles of architectural beauty.  We believe that certain shapes, proportions, and symmetry are inherently pleasing to the eye.  We strive to design and build homes that are historically authentic on the outside while providing innovative spaces and features on the inside.  Many of our homes would fit seamlessly on a historic street in Georgetown or Charleston, but a walk inside reveals 10-foot ceilings, livable open floorplans, smart thermostats, and high performance chef's kitchens.

The Parkwood Homes team takes frequent trips to historic cities and towns across America and the world, studying great buildings that inspire and refine our architecture.  We’ve counted our paces to determine building setbacks in London, studied grid patterns and relative heights of windows on second and third floors of 19th century Georgetown row homes, and investigated the origins and purposes behind haint blue porch ceilings in Charleston.  Our architect studied the Vitruvian virtues in Rome and 19th century brownstones up and down the east coast.  But we also invest time analyzing the relative “R-values” of different framing, sheathing, and insulation configurations to minimize heat flux and build a more comfortable home that reduces energy costs.  We strive to give families the best of both worlds—timeless beauty and innovative excellence.

True Customization

True Customization

You get to build your home, the way you want it at Parkwood Homes.  We’ve been building dream homes for families for 25 years, and have decided that both we and our customers are happiest and most satisfied when we let you chart the course.

We’re pretty particular about keeping our exterior elevations true to their architectural roots and so don’t allow changes there.  On the inside of the house, though, we start with our base floor plans but hope and expect that you’ll customize.  In fact, in several cases, we like some of your ideas better than aspects of our original plan and incorporate the best changes into our standard floor plan.

And we’re not just talking about selecting cabinet colors or light fixtures.  Buying a Parkwood Home gives you the opportunity to move windows, walls, and rooms in ways that only million-dollar custom home buyers usually get to do.  Two recent families who bought the Chestertown house had very different visions for their dream home.  Now that they’re complete, a visitor walking into the two distinctly unique homes would have no idea that they started with the same plan.

Each Parkwood single family home buyer gets a chance to sit down with our home designer and go through the floorplan.  As the family describes how they live and what they want, the floorplan evolves to a perfect fit.  Like getting a tailored suit, customizing your home may take a little longer and sometimes costs a little more, but the end result is one-of-a-kind.  A home designed to fit the way your family lives.  A home that we can all be proud of.

High Performance Homes

High Performance Homes

Parkwood Homes is committed to building a better house every year than we did the year before.  One of the areas in which we’ve seen the greatest improvement over the last ten years is Energy Efficiency.  High energy costs and climate change concerns have led the industry to an increased focus on building a smarter home.  Resulting new technologies and practices have allowed us to build a house that is better for the environment and saves our customers a lot of money.

Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship

One of the most common things we hear from our homebuyers when they tell us why they chose a Parkwood is that when they walked in the door, “it just felt like home.”  We couldn’t ask for a more meaningful compliment.  It’s hard to put a finger on just what exactly gives people that feeling, but we think it has a lot to do with some of the standard features that Parkwood builds in to every home.  Three-piece crown molding, classic window and door casings, a smooth drywall finish, gleaming hardwood floors, and custom built-ins are all signs of a home built with care using time-honored traditions.  In addition to these details that make a Parkwood feel like that charming home we grew up in, new Parkwood homes have thoughtful open floorplans, ten-foot ceilings, and are equipped with the latest technologies to help simplify our modern lives, like NEST Learning Thermostats, thorough connectivity, and Bosch appliances.

Service

Service

After 25 years of building homes for families in Maryland and Colorado, Parkwood Homes has earned strong reputation as a builder that cares about its customers and its product.  Three out of four Parkwood Homes purchasers in Stapleton are either already Stapleton residents and are moving up to a new Parkwood, or were referred to us by a friend who lives in a Parkwood.  Each year we have several 2nd and 3rd-time Parkwood buyers.  All this speaks to the importance we place on making our homeowners not just satisfied customers but loyal fans.

Parkwood customers are invited to fill out satisfaction surveys at four stages during and after their homebuilding process.  We utilize a third-party surveying company, Guild Quality, that specializes in measuring customer satisfaction for homebuilders.  We use these survey results to measure our performance and to identify areas that need increased attention.

More than 92% of Parkwood homebuyers say they would recommend us to a friend, a number that places us far above the industry average of roughly 70%.  In fact, Parkwood Homes has been honored with the prestigious Guildmaster Award in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015.  The Guildmaster Award is a special recognition given to builders that "demonstrate an ability to deliver a consistently superior customer experience” by garnering over 90% recommendation rates.
